7 super simple ways to stay awake and maximize consciousness

Gotta stay up? Here's what has been working for me the past few weeks:

  • Push ups. No really, do 10 pushups and really get the blood pumping.
  • Turn up some angry Alice in Chains or Nirvana. Even 30 seconds of headbanging will wake you right up. Draw on that long forgotten and locked away teenage angst from the early 90's.
  • Chug a red bull. Sugarfree ideally. Fast and effective.
  • Sit up straight. Slouching in your chair will make you lazy and you'll end up watching hulu.com for half an hour. Sit up straight, and your whole mindset will be different.
  • Don't forget to eat. Eating is the #1 driver for energy. Have some nuts or wasabi peas around. Eat them a handful an hour.
  • Drink more water. If you're thirsty at all, it will affect your ability to think.
  • Take a nap. If all else fails, take a 20 minute nap. It's easy to be a zombie and waste time, so know when to say when.

Whether you need to cram for your next final, watch one more hour of Gossip Girl, or code to obliterate your competitors, I've found these simple actions can go a long way. You got any tips to share? Would love to hear it in the comments!

I can do better than that. Get regular sleep and plenty of it. A routine is good for your body and mind.

Do your coding in the morning, after a good breakfast.

If only I listened to my own advice...

Haha, I can't code in the morning, my brain doesn't function. For some reason I'm best around 3 AM to 6 AM. What a curse.

hey Garry long time no talk i'm giving this a shot. my pitch is you have to force yourself awake something's off in your routine (diet, sleep, exercise, etc).

some ideas: 1) don't require signup to comment and 2) what about a post to MySpace?

Wassup Rajit -- haha, well startup life is by definition a bit "off". I seriously tried to be balanced and I just didn't get enough done. =)

I personally require signup, but you can turn it off pretty easily (the blog owner controls it).

Post to myspace is coming. There's lots that can be done on the widget side of things. But we do have Facebook going pretty well.

I second the recommendation for sleep :). I also am most productive from midnight to 4am. So I sleep from 4am to noon every night. Being well rested makes you more productive.

No matter how weird your hours are, I have found that a sleeping routine works best for me. Sleep the same hours every night.

A friend of mine from college told me that his college essay was on how to stay awake by drinking water. The jist of the essay is that if you keep drinking A LOT of water, your full bladder will keep you awake. I dunno how effective it is in keeping concentration on your work, though! =)

i am most productive at night- about 10 p.m. I get my stuff done. I feel energized because I have eaten dinner- I think food helps me concentrate

I think...when you're really sleepy but need to stay awake, taking a nap is not a good idea. Or maybe it's just me. I always end up sleeping the whole night through if I decide to take a short nap.

Get at least 6 hours of sleep per night and eat less sugar. Sugar tend to give a fast energy boost, but you will start nodding off just as quickly.

If there's no caffeine within reach, Gatorade does the trick for me. It might be a placebo effect but it works for me, keeps my eyes open. I've got to try that angry Nirvana though, thanx for the tip.
