FlickrMail - Mea culpa, it will never happen again.

Hey friends. Listen, bad news. I got banned from Flickr today.

I made the mistake of wanting to tell my 1,600 contacts about this thing, posterous, that me and a friend created. We're proud of our community and our work and wanted to share it with more people. We just worked all weekend to provide autopost to Flickr functionality. Then this morning, I had a thought to share my excitement with my friends on Flickr by sending mass Flickr Mail.

I've been a member of the Flickr community since 2004. I've been a really active member since 2006, when I got my first Canon Digital Rebel XTI. I've joined countless groups, and uploaded over 1,000 photos, many of which I've spent HOURS or DAYS postprocessing. I've had over 60 photos make it into the top 500 photos on Flickr for the day they were uploaded. That was always a rush. I've probably spent close to $20,000 in camera equipment along the way, as the Flickr-frenzy of enthusiasm for photography became a great obsession -- one of the great hobbies I'll never stop loving.

Along the way, I've commented and made contact with 1,600 great flickr-ites along the way. I feel like there's a real connection between me and many of them, and it's really kind of like just wanting to show your friends this cool thing you created. I think one part of online communities like Flickr is that you get an illusion that you know people well, and that the link between you and others is closer than they really are.

I myself get unsolicited mass FlickrMail from my contacts all the time, but I never really considered it awful. It was always on topic, something to do with photos or even a Flickr contact being in the San Francisco area and asking if anyone had a couch to crash on. I don't mind that stuff at all. That's awesome. That's what makes Flickr great.

A bunch of my contacts from flickr thanked me for the note and are now using posterous. That's great. I'm excited you're here.

Unfortunately, some of my contacts saw this as spam and emailed me so. To them, I am very very VERY sorry.

I spend hours of my day fighting spam and defending the posterous community, and it pains me to know that I was part of the problem on Flickr. I will never EVER willingly contribute to spam of any kind, good-intentioned or not.

You have my word.

Well that blows. Can you appeal to Flickr and beg forgiveness?

Yes. A mistake is a mistake. I'm hoping for the best. I've definitely invested a huge amount of time into my flickr photostream, so I'll be pretty sad if it's gone forever. But, consequences are consequences.

Would it help if your Flickr contacts who joined and those who subscribe to your feed pleaded your case to Flickr?

If it makes you feel better, my friend uploaded a pic of her in a thong on facebook, and was warned that if she upload any more porn like that, she'll be banned. Happens to the best of us. =)

Admittedly, when I first saw your FlickerMail, my response was WTF, since the tone did seem a bit more like an ad and less like personal communication. (Perhaps you've been writing too many official company statements recently?) But I got over it pretty fast, probably because I happen to know you personally, and know that you're not the spammer type, so I guessed it was just overzealousness.

That said, it sucks that you've been banned, and I hope it's just them giving you a timeout of sorts, because being banned completely for a first infraction after years of problem free membership seems heavy handed to me. Hope you get the account back, and if you do end up needing anyone to vouch for your character, you know where to find me. =]

@Linda -- probably it would help =) I'd appreciate the note, but I'm not sure what the best place to contact Flickr would be.

@Sanny -- wow, I guess they have to keep an eye on content. It's such a tough line to walk with a content sharing site like that-- you don't want to censor, but you can't have stuff that might be seen as inappropriate just hanging out all over the place.

@Bem -- Thanks man. Yeah, no more writing spam at 3am, no matter how good an idea it seems like. =)

Thanks for the support guys. I really feel awful about the whole thing.

Sooo... they just picked up a banhammer and hit you without any warning whatsoever? I'm thinking somebody at Flickr was a bit overzealous. Bad PR for them in my eyes.

Good on you for writing that post. Nothing like a little openness and honesty heal the wounds. Flickr'd be crazy not to want you back. You clearly add big value to their community.

;)
I think there's times on our life we become euphoric for a new project (this project in particular are great), and we make some crazy things.

But you know what? the worst part of it is to be sorry, just don´t do it again, but don´t cry!

Again: Sorry my really bad english :(

It's hard not to be passionate about something you love! You just want to shout it out from the rooftops! Good luck with Flickr.
